About excursionsPirogov's museumNikolay Pirogov (1810-1881) is one of the greatest Russian surgeons, the well-known pathologist; the founder of the military forces surgery, the organization and tactics of medicine maintenance of armies. Pirogov was the first who discovered an ether narcosis. It happened in 1846. The surgeon was an honorary member of many domestic and foreign universities. He wrote and published more then 850 scientific works and articles. Many of them are very popular nowadays. Pirogov spent his last years in a manor Vishnya (Cherry), which is situated not far from Vinnitsa. During these years Pirogov has projected a botanical garden in Spain. All the time he was engaged in scientific and charity activities. After Pirogov's death his body was embalmed and up to this day it is kept in a special crypt. After the World War II under the initiative of the main Military-Medical management Pirogov's manor was restored. Now there is a nice museum, which is conducted by Ministry of Health of Ukraine. Hitler's headquartersAt the end of August 1941, in a month after German's invasion of Vinnitsa, a construction of the object called Hitler's headquarters was begun in a forest near village Kolo-Mihailovka (which is 8 km from Vinnitsa). The forest near the village was enclosed with a fence and declared a prohibited area. In September 1941 the first part of the soviet prisoners of war was brought there. 10000 of the soviet prisoners of war were involved in the construction of Hitler's headquarters. All works were completed at the end of April 1942. The walls of the entrances to the underground lodgment were 2,5 meters thick. The object was strenuously guarded. In November 1942, Hitler came there. In January 1943, came Hebbels and in March - Roselber. In August 1943, Hitler visited the object again. In March 1944, before Germans retreat for the river Southern Bug the object was blown up. Today we can see huge blocks and entrances covered with bushes and the only kept construction - pool, on the place of the explosion. |
